McLaren has rediscovered its bite in the mid-season of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign. Two wins and a victory lost due to an unlucky Virtual Safety Car in the last four races prove that the MCL40 is no longer just a grid filler. The Woking-based team is slowly but surely becoming a real threat to the frontrunners.

Since the start of the season, McLaren took a different approach. They chose not to rush big updates, focusing instead on understanding the aerodynamics of the new car. The fruits of that patience began to show between the Miami and Canadian Grands Prix, when the first development package was introduced. Although not perfect—especially with the front wing that needed revision—the car's foundation was set.

Aerodynamic Updates Hit the Spot

The peak came during the trio of races in Budapest, Zandvoort, and Madrid. Three circuits with different characters: the narrow, twisty Hungaroring, the banked corners of Zandvoort demanding high downforce, and Madrid requiring a balance between straight-line speed and cornering stability. At all three, McLaren dominated.

The key was the new floor introduced in Hungary and refined in Italy. Its geometry is said to be inspired by Ferrari's floor, but with a McLaren twist. Additionally, a more complex version of the FTM behind the exhaust and a high-downforce rear wing that appeared in the Netherlands and Madrid made the MCL40 even more complete. While Ferrari and Mercedes stood still, McLaren kept moving forward.

Improved Tyre Interaction

The aerodynamic updates didn't just add downforce; they also made the MCL40 more tyre-friendly. The car is now much stronger in high-speed corners—a target of the second evolution package. But another area has improved: tyre management. Andrea Stella, quoted from FormulaPassion, mentioned that the team's understanding of the tyres is now better, allowing drivers to maintain consistency throughout races.

However, weaknesses in slow corners and braking stability still linger. This is homework for McLaren if they want to truly compete at every circuit. But at least, they have found the right direction.

Second Place in the Championship Within Reach

With performance on the rise, second place in the constructors' championship is no longer a dream. McLaren just needs to maintain consistency and capitalize on every opportunity. Meanwhile, they have already prepared corrections for the 2027 project, showing that the team is not only focused on the short term.

If this continues, it wouldn't be surprising to see McLaren back at the top. And for fans, it's a spectacle not to be missed.
