McLaren has warned that it is still far too early to draw conclusions about the 2026 Formula 1 title battle despite the team’s highly competitive performance at the Miami Grand Prix.

Team principal Andrea Stella stressed that McLaren must avoid becoming overconfident after securing a strong weekend in Miami, including a Sprint victory for Lando Norris and a double podium finish in the main race.

The result represented McLaren’s most competitive performance of the season so far and provided early evidence that the team’s latest upgrade package is beginning to deliver meaningful gains. However, Stella believes the championship situation remains too open to make major predictions after only four rounds.

“We need to be careful if we start thinking too far ahead about the championship,” Stella explained.

At present, Mercedes still controls the early phase of the season with four grand prix victories from the opening four races. Nevertheless, McLaren’s performance in Miami demonstrated that the competitive gap may be shrinking, particularly regarding tyre management and long-run race pace.

From a technical perspective, Stella admitted that Miami’s circuit characteristics suited McLaren’s current development philosophy particularly well. According to the Italian, the medium-to-high-speed layout allowed McLaren’s aerodynamic package to operate more efficiently compared to some previous venues.

As a result, McLaren is not yet prepared to conclude that it can consistently challenge Mercedes across every type of circuit on the calendar.

“We have only just introduced our first upgrade of the season and Miami has historically suited our car,” Stella added.

Despite the cautious approach, Stella praised the team’s early-season development response. McLaren continues pushing an aggressive update programme after successfully defending both the constructors’ and drivers’ championships during the 2025 campaign.

From a championship perspective, Miami became an important weekend because McLaren managed to reduce part of the gap to Mercedes while also maintaining pressure on rivals such as Ferrari and Red Bull Racing.

McLaren also believes development consistency will become one of the decisive factors throughout 2026, especially as the current regulations still allow significant performance swings through aerodynamic upgrades and setup refinement.

“We want to defend the championship, but the main focus remains doing the right job every weekend,” Stella said.

With Mercedes still looking dominant but McLaren beginning to build momentum through its latest upgrades, the next phase of development across upcoming races is now expected to determine whether the Woking-based squad can genuinely re-enter the full fight for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship.
