Deep disappointment was clearly visible on Andrea Stella's face when his two standout drivers collided just moments before the checkered flag dropped during the sprint race at the Marina Bay street circuit. The McLaren team principal knew instantly that eight crucial world championship points had vanished into thin air following an involuntary spin on the asphalt. While Lando Norris managed to limp home and salvage an eighth-place finish, his teammate Oscar Piastri was forced to endure a bitter retirement.
The Australian driver had been well on course to secure a comfortable fourth position before his garage companion launched an aggressive attack at turn five, triggering a complete disaster for the papaya squad. Stella described the scenario as entirely unacceptable, firmly emphasizing that the collective interest of the organization vastly outweighs the ambitions of any single individual.
This exact internal dilemma caught the attention of former team boss Otmar Szafnauer, who revealed during an appearance on the High Performance Racing Podcast alongside former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley what he would explicitly tell his drivers in a similar situation. Szafnauer argued that swapping places without strategic benefit achieves nothing, noting that such moves are often driven solely by a desire to secure one extra point over a teammate rather than focusing on the bigger picture.

The 62-year-old expert acknowledged the natural racing instincts that prompted Norris to spot a gap and launch a passing maneuver, explaining that competitive drivers will always seize an opportunity if no strict contractual deterrents are in place. However, he stressed the necessity of making the overarching team goals abundantly clear to everyone inside the garage.
To solve this recurring headache, Szafnauer proposed a strategic contractual adjustment that ties the team's championship standing directly to lucrative financial bonuses for both drivers. Under such a binding agreement, pilots would think twice before executing reckless maneuvers because any collective failure by the constructor would directly impact their own personal rewards.
