George Russell initially caught the field sleeping by jumping Verstappen into the opening corner, but his stint at the front lasted less than a single lap. The Mercedes driver lost control exiting the final corner, spinning heavily into the pitwall and extinguishing his remaining championship aspirations.
Russell's exit handed the lead to Verstappen, who calmly managed the race restart following an early safety car period to build a comfortable gap over Lewis Hamilton.
