Max Verstappen fired a sharp criticism after a qualifying session at Monza that ended in sixth place. The four-time world champion described his Red Bull RB22 as if it were "made out of paper" due to components breaking or getting stuck at the rear.
This complaint is nothing new. Verstappen admitted he has been raising this issue for years, but the team has yet to find a permanent solution. As a result, the car loses performance when riding over bumps and kerbs.
Chronic Issues at the Rear of the RB22
After the qualifying session, Verstappen explained that components in the rear area of his car often break or jam, especially when riding over kerbs and bumps. This causes excessive bouncing and costs significant lap time.
"Sometimes it happens in practice and you can still fix it for the next day. Sometimes it happens during the race, like in Austria, and now it happened between FP3 and qualifying," Verstappen told Dutch media.
Verstappen declined to specify which part is problematic, but stressed that certain components at the rear are "not good enough" to last a race weekend. This is a major homework for Red Bull engineers amid the tight competition this season.
Impact on Driving Style and Team Strategy
This issue forces Verstappen to adjust his approach at certain moments. He admitted to deliberately holding back and taking fewer risks, especially when fighting for midfield positions. "If you're fighting for seventh place, you can't push too hard," he said.
Verstappen also noted that the team does listen to his feedback and keeps trying to fix it. However, they have yet to succeed in finding the root cause. This situation adds pressure on Red Bull as they aim to maintain their lead in the constructors' championship.
With a long season ahead, Red Bull's ability to resolve this technical issue will be key in the title fight. Fans certainly hope the Milton Keynes-based squad finds a solution soon so Verstappen can perform at his best without worries.
