Max Verstappen revealed that problems developed on his Red Bull Racing car during the second half of the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, preventing him from mounting a decisive challenge for victory at the team's home race.
The four-time Formula 1 world champion recovered from fifth on the grid to finish second, crossing the line just 1.611 seconds behind race winner George Russell. Verstappen also had to defend his position from the charging Andrea Kimi Antonelli during the closing laps.
The result completed an impressive recovery after Verstappen crashed during the closing stages of qualifying while challenging for pole position. Red Bull accepted responsibility for the incident, while the Dutchman responded with a strong drive across the 71-lap race at the Red Bull Ring.

Verstappen spent the opening phase battling Lewis Hamilton before shifting his focus to chasing Russell. However, he explained that the RB22 began developing issues midway through the race, preventing him from maintaining the pace required to attack for victory.
"It was a very good race for us. The first few laps were quite fun, and then it was basically just trying to manage all your tyres. Honestly, I think the car was in quite a good window for about half of the race," Verstappen said.
"Then we picked up a few issues with the car, which prevented me from finding that nice rhythm. Still, to finish second and be that close to victory is extremely positive for us. In that sense, I'm very happy," he added.
Although he fell short of victory, Verstappen secured his strongest result of the 2026 Formula 1 season so far. The performance also highlighted Red Bull's improved competitiveness at the Red Bull Ring, even if the late-race car issues ultimately prevented the team from converting its pace into a home victory.
