Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen and Winward Racing have been disqualified from victory in the 2026 NLS2 round at the Nürburgring after a tyre regulation breach during the four-hour endurance race.
The Red Bull Racing Formula 1 driver delivered a competitive performance on his first outing with a Mercedes-AMG GT3 package. Sharing the No.3 car with Jules Gounon and Daniel Juncadella, Verstappen secured pole position and controlled significant portions of the race, despite briefly losing the lead to Christopher Haase in the early stages.
The team executed an effective driver rotation strategy, with Verstappen returning for the final stint to take the chequered flag after 29 laps, finishing nearly one minute clear of the nearest competitor. The result initially marked Verstappen’s second Nürburgring victory and his first in NLS competition with Mercedes machinery.

However, the result was overturned following post-race scrutiny by the organisers, the ADAC RAVENOL Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie. Data from the official “Tyre App” revealed that the No.3 crew had used seven sets of tyres during the race, exceeding the regulatory limit of six sets.
“During the routine review by the technical commission, it was discovered that the car used seven sets of tyres on race day instead of the permitted six. The stewards were therefore obliged to disqualify the car,” stated the organisers.
As a result, victory was awarded to Dan Harper and Jordan Pepper in the BMW M4 GT3 entered by ROWE Racing. The decision significantly altered the final classification and championship points distribution.
Team principal Christian Hohenadel acknowledged the internal error that led to the infringement and issued a formal apology.
“The disqualification hurts. A mistake within the team forced race control to retroactively disqualify the winning car. We will now analyse everything thoroughly and prepare more carefully for the remaining races,” he said.
Despite the setback, Verstappen reaffirmed his interest in continuing to compete at the Nürburgring, particularly as calendar adjustments in Formula 1 create opportunities for additional endurance racing appearances. He described the Nordschleife as one of the most technically demanding circuits in global motorsport.
With early-season Formula 1 disruptions opening schedule flexibility, Verstappen is evaluating participation in upcoming NLS rounds. The team’s focus will now shift toward operational refinement and preparation for the Nürburgring 24 Hours, a key target in their endurance racing programme.
