Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has revealed his interest in competing in the Daytona 24 Hours the in 2027. This ambition follows his recent participation in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, where he was on track for a maiden victory before a lengthy mechanical failure relegated his team to 38th place.
Technically, Verstappen prefers competing in the GT3 class rather than the faster GTP category. The fundamental difference lies in the vehicle architecture; GT3 cars are based on production vehicles with strict Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations, whereas GTP cars are pure prototypes designed for maximum performance with significantly higher aerodynamic loads. This preference for GT3 indicates Verstappen's desire to explore vehicle dynamics closer to road-going specifications while remaining competitive.
A primary logistical consideration for Verstappen is that the Daytona 24 Hours takes place in January. While the event does not clash with the main Formula 1 race calendar, it significantly impacts his physical preparation. Verstappen acknowledged that participating would require a total overhaul of his pre-season training program, which typically commences in January, to accommodate the specific demands of an endurance race.
His experience at Nürburgring using a Mercedes-AMG GT3 provided new insights into risk management and component durability over a 24-hour period. Despite the frustrating result caused by mechanical failure, Verstappen viewed the experience as highly positive. This reinforces his trend of seeking challenges outside the single-seater ecosystem, particularly in disciplines that test long-term consistency.
In addition to his Daytona plans, Verstappen is targeting a return to the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2027, provided the dates do not conflict with an F1 weekend. This commitment demonstrates his intent to build a competitive portfolio across various motorsport categories without compromising his performance as a leading driver on the F1 grid.
Analytically, Verstappen's move into endurance racing represents a diversification of his technical skill set. Driving a GT3 car, which is significantly heavier and has different braking distribution than an F1 car, trains his sensitivity to grip and tire management under fluctuating track conditions. This provides an additional dimension to his ability to adapt to vehicles with contrasting characteristics.
