Max Verstappen has openly admitted that he will potentially have to take a grid penalty in the remaining rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 world championship. The reigning four-time world champion is currently teetering on the absolute limit of his permitted power unit component allocation for the entire season.

Heading into the eighteenth round of the year at the Circuit of the Americas, the Dutch driver has managed to avoid any grid drops for exceeding power unit limits so far. However, Red Bull engineers are carefully managing his pool as he relies on his final available components before triggering automatic sanctions.

Verstappen is currently utilizing his last authorized units of the internal combustion engine, turbocharger, MGU-K, energy store, control electronics, and exhaust system. With six races still remaining on the calendar—including this weekend in Austin as well as the season-ending flyaways in Qatar and Abu Dhabi—a future grid penalty appears almost inevitable before the checkered flag in the Middle East.

Addressing the media on Thursday ahead of track action, the championship contender acknowledged the looming technical hurdle. "That we have to take a penalty at one point, yeah, potentially," Max Verstappen said on Thursday ahead of the US GP when asked about possible grid penalties coming his way before the end of the season. "But there's no known date to that at the moment. So, we just see what happens."

Under the 2026 sporting regulations, drivers face a steep 10-place grid drop for the first instance of exceeding a component allocation, with subsequent additions carrying a five-place penalty. As reported by Crash.net, picking the optimal track to absorb this inevitable setback remains a crucial strategic puzzle for the Milton Keynes-based squad.
