Jorge Martin secured a crucial pole position for the Austrian MotoGP, beating championship rival Marc Marquez and practice dominator Pedro Acosta. The Aprilia rider's late surge in Q2 denied Acosta a home pole for KTM.
Acosta, buoyed by his strong practice form, led the early part of Q2 but was ultimately outpaced by Martin and Marquez's factory Ducati. The battle for pole intensified in the final laps, with Martin emerging fastest.
Marquez and Martin now share the championship lead, with Marquez ahead on countback after his double victory and Martin's arm pump issues at Misano. The rivalry between the two is heating up as the season progresses.
Martin's teammate Marco Bezzecchi qualified fourth, just two tenths off the front trio, while Trackhouse's Ai Ogura, returning from injury, completed the top five. Three Aprilias in the top five highlight the bike's competitiveness at the Red Bull Ring.
However, the other Aprilia of Raul Fernandez struggled, failing to progress from Q1 and qualifying only 13th, his worst starting position since Austin. Gresini's Alex Marquez crashed at Turn 1 in the dying moments of Q2, echoing his brother Marc's crash in the preceding practice session.
Pecco Bagnaia, after a disappointing Friday, made it through Q1 along with Johann Zarco and qualified a encouraging seventh. The Italian will look to move forward in the race.
With a tantalizing grid, the Austrian MotoGP promises intense action. Martin, Marquez, and Acosta are the main contenders, but others will be eager to challenge.
