Marc Marquez wasted no time asserting his dominance in the opening practice session of the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. The Ducati rider set the fastest time of 1m31.468s, edging out title rival Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia by a mere 0.060 seconds. This slim margin sets the stage for a thrilling weekend.
FP1 took place on a notoriously slippery Misano track. Weather in the days leading up to the event left the surface 'greener' than usual, resulting in very low grip. Consequently, riders had to be extremely cautious, and lap times only began to tumble significantly towards the end of the session, even as they stuck with the same rubber. Marquez snatched the top spot right at the chequered flag, thanks to a particularly strong final sector.
Behind the Marquez-Bezzecchi duo, Raul Fernandez of Trackhouse Aprilia was hot on their heels in third, just 0.133 seconds adrift. Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati) and Johann Zarco (LCR Honda) completed the top five, with the gap to Marquez only 0.182 seconds. Such a tight margin indicates that the competition at Misano will be fierce.
Pedro Acosta of KTM had to settle for sixth despite crashing at Turn 1 early in the session. The incident didn't dampen his spirits as he remained competitive. Meanwhile, Jack Miller (Pramac Yamaha) was the only other rider to fall. He crashed at Turn 4 on his outlap, just 30 seconds into the session. It was such a sudden crash that it looked like a wet-weather fall.
Interestingly, reigning world champion Pecco Bagnaia had to settle for 18th, nearly a second behind Marquez. This signals that Bagnaia is still searching for the best setup on his bike at this challenging track. Meanwhile, Jorge Martin of Aprilia was eighth, just 0.267 seconds behind Marquez. Martin, known for his aggression, seems yet to find his best rhythm.
With these FP1 results, the battle for qualifying and the race this weekend is expected to heat up even more. Marquez and Bezzecchi will continue their intense rivalry, while other riders like Acosta, Fernandez, and Quartararo are ready to spring a surprise.
