Marc Marquez didn't hesitate when asked about his biggest weapon in the 2026 MotoGP title battle. In his trademark straight-shooting style, the Ducati rider pointed to "my bike and my team" as the key, rather than his talent or experience. That succinct answer speaks volumes, especially considering he once trailed the championship leader by 102 points back in May.
Marquez now sits second in the standings, 12 points behind Jorge Martin of Aprilia. He briefly took the lead after winning the San Marino Grand Prix, but a less-than-ideal outing in Austria last weekend—second in the sprint and fifth in the grand prix—saw him surrender the top spot. Nevertheless, he remains confident in the strength of his team and machine.
What makes his performance even more remarkable is the ongoing issue with his right shoulder. His surgeon revealed that Marquez's arm is at only 50 percent of its maximum capacity. Yet he refuses to use that as an excuse. "My bike and my team" remains his answer, even when asked if his talent or experience plays a bigger role. "No—my bike and my team," he asserted.
This year's title fight involves the top four riders: Marquez, Martin, Pedro Acosta, and one other. According to Marquez, all four are ready to battle, including Acosta, who trails by 72 points but just won in Austria. "Top four guys are ready to fight for the championship," he said. "As we see with Pedro, since Silverstone, KTM has opened the engines and has good power again. They are ready to fight for the championship."
Ducati is expected to be strong again in Japan, with Motegi's stop-and-go layout and the return of Michelin's standard rear tyre suiting the Desmosedici. However, Marquez actually sees Acosta as the favourite there. "In Motegi, after this GP, Pedro is again the favourite. Every year he has been very, very fast there. Already he was very fast in his first year; he crashed while leading the sprint race, and in the main race he crashed in second, fighting for the victory. So, let's see. As I say, top four guys, it will be a tight last seven races."
With seven races remaining, the tension is mounting. Marquez knows consistency and team support will be decisive. "It will be a tight last seven races," he concluded. If he can maintain his performance and keep his bike competitive, a ninth career title could well be on the cards.
