Marc Marquez has once again etched his name in history. With his victory at the Aragon Grand Prix, the rider from Cervera officially surpassed Valentino Rossi's record for the number of wins in the MotoGP class. This achievement is clear proof that, little by little, the student has surpassed his teacher.
Rossi and Marquez are often called two of the greatest riders of all time, of course with due respect to Giacomo Agostini. But Rossi holds a special place: he was not only a champion, but also changed the way people view motorcycle racing. His popularity exploded, bringing MotoGP to a broader global stage.
Rossi was also a witness to the era shift from 500cc to MotoGP. He was the last to win in 500cc and the first to win in MotoGP. His move from Honda to Yamaha at the time was considered suicide, but it turned out to be a masterstroke. Meanwhile, Marquez arrived as the heir apparent, and with his aggressive style, he has been breaking records since his debut in the premier class.
The win at Aragon was Marquez's 77th in MotoGP, surpassing Rossi's 76. However, it is worth noting that Rossi still leads overall if counting 500cc wins—he has 13 additional victories, bringing his total to 89. That means Marquez will only truly lead overall if he reaches the 90-win mark.
Age is a distinguishing factor in this comparison. Rossi retired at 42, nine years older than Marquez's current age. Rossi took his first win at 21, while Marquez was younger, at 20. As for their latest wins, Rossi's last was at Assen at 38, whereas Marquez's at Aragon at 33—there is still plenty of time to add more, especially since he just signed a two-year extension with Ducati.
Interestingly, their win distribution differs. Rossi collected 77 wins between ages 20-30, while Marquez had 'only' 59 in that same period. However, in their 30s, Marquez has been more prolific: 18 wins compared to Rossi's 12. All of Marquez's wins in this age bracket have come with Ducati, considered the best bike on the grid, even though he has also had to battle physical issues that are not always ideal.
What is certain is that despite his already remarkable record, Marquez still has many stories to write. His right arm may not be what it once was, but his desire to keep winning has never faded. The question now is: can he chase down the 90-win total and truly surpass Rossi in every aspect?
