Marc Marquez heads into the MotoGP Aragon weekend with full confidence that he can return to the sharp end of the field. That belief comes after a tough outing at Silverstone, where he could only manage ninth and seventh places, far below the standard of the reigning champion.
Statistically, Marc Marquez has an outstanding record at the Aragon circuit. He has been unbeaten in the last four races at the anti-clockwise track. Before that, he won five times with Repsol Honda. Last year, riding for Gresini, he took an emotional Sprint and main race victory, his first with Ducati.
That double at Aragon last season was the start of a 15-race winning streak that carried him to a ninth world title. However, a dip in form at Silverstone has left him 40 points behind championship leader, Jorge Martin. The situation clearly adds pressure, and Aragon provides a golden opportunity to close the gap.
“I have gathered a lot of success in Aragon in the past, especially in recent years aboard the Ducati,” said Marquez. “It's a track that enhances my characteristics and the riding of our bike to the fullest. Compared to Silverstone and with two additional weeks of recovery, I am convinced that we will be much closer to the lead group and that we can be in the fight for the positions that matter, both in the Sprint and in Sunday's race.”
His teammate, Pecco Bagnaia, also has fond memories of Aragon. It was there that he claimed his first MotoGP victory in 2021, beating Marquez. But the following year, he had to concede defeat to Enea Bastianini in a close duel.
“Aragon is a track to which I am particularly attached: here I achieved my first victory in MotoGP, my very first with Ducati,” said Bagnaia, who underwent arm surgery during the summer break. “Compared to Silverstone, it is a less physically demanding circuit. I expect to be closer to the leaders right from the start and getting back into the slipstream of the fastest riders.”
Bagnaia is currently eighth in the world championship. With both Ducati Lenovo riders equally motivated, Aragon could be the stage for their resurgence and an answer to Aprilia's dominance in Britain.
