Australian motorsport legend and Supercars Hall of Famer Mark Skaife has finally opened up about a major health scare that he kept hidden from the public for years. The 59-year-old racing icon revealed that he secretly underwent emergency heart surgery following a severe medical crisis that forced him to step away from his professional commitments.
The shocking revelation came to light when Mark Skaife appeared as a guest on the Berett’s Best podcast hosted by prominent presenter Mark Beretta. During the candid interview, the racing great reflected on the exact moment outside of competitive racing that fundamentally altered his outlook on life and human mortality.
At the time of the incident, motorsports fans were led to believe that Mark Skaife was simply absent from the high-profile event at Queensland Raceway due to a severe case of the flu. However, the reality behind closed doors was far more critical, involving a hidden battle with cardiovascular issues that required immediate surgical intervention.

"I got really crook in 2017," Mark Skaife revealed during the podcast episode. "No one knew, but I had these two effectively like strokes – they were little holes in my heart – so I actually ended up having to have heart surgery. I missed Queensland Raceway because I was in hospital and the strokes were caused by these holes in my heart."
The veteran driver brought up the terrifying health ordeal when asked which non-racing moment changed him the most as a person. The profound realization of his own vulnerability left a lasting psychological impact that completely shifted how he views his time both on and off the circuit.
"I’ve been 10 years on, no drama," he added regarding his current health status and recovery. "But it really did change me because it was a level of mortality that I just didn’t ever think of. And when it happened, [I thought] ‘oh my god, what’s life going to look like? What’s this?’ I couldn’t write. I couldn’t speak properly to begin with."
"It was like it was bad, really bad. And again, I’ve never spoken about it, but that was as heavy as it got." Having successfully overcome the darkest chapter of his life, Mark Skaife is now set to make a triumphant return to his Supercars commentary duties for the legendary Bathurst 1000 with radio network SEN, while Mark Beretta returns to television coverage alongside Seven's broadcast team.
