Racing legend Mario Andretti is present at the Circuit of the Americas in his role as a board member for the Cadillac F1 team. His presence at the track evokes childhood memories when he and his twin brother Aldo watched Ferrari star Alberto Ascari secure the world championship titles in 1952 and 1953 at Monza. Now, the 1978 F1 world champion sees immense potential in Kimi Antonelli, whom he views as the next Italian world champion in the making.

Reflecting on the massive growth of top-tier motorsport in the United States, the former Indy 500 winner expressed amazement at the incredible reception from local fans. As reported by Speedweek, he admitted that the immense success driven by Liberty Media surpasses anything he could have ever imagined during his own racing days when American interest was comparatively low.

«If someone had told me a few years ago that Formula 1 would be this successful in the United States, I would never have believed it,» Andretti explained to Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Giulia Toninelli. He added that the only missing piece in the grand atmosphere at Austin is the presence of an American driver on the grid to fully ignite the passion of the local supporters.

Assessing the current sporting landscape, Andretti refused to fall into the trap of outdated nostalgia. He believes Formula 1 is in a fantastic place right now, praising how every generation brings its own rules, fans, stars, and priorities. His attention remains firmly fixed on the extraordinary talents delivering high-value entertainment and generating raw emotions for fans worldwide.

«I am a big fan. I am truly thrilled by what Kimi is showing, it is a spectacle for anyone who loves Formula 1. Soon he will be the fourth Italian to win a world championship, after me, Ascari, and Farina,» Andretti praised, while fondly recalling his own emotional victory at Monza, which he believes remains an unmatched milestone for any driver.

Looking ahead to the 2027 season, Mario Andretti harbors high expectations for an even stronger Ferrari squad. The Italian powerhouse has demonstrated significant steps forward compared to previous campaigns, and a more potent technical package will undoubtedly elevate the intensity of the world championship battle.
