Marco Bezzecchi avoided a penalty from the FIM Stewards following a scary collision with Alex Marquez during the opening practice session of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. The Aprilia rider was following his Gresini rival through the fast left-hander at Turn 3 before the pair collided under heavy braking heading into Turn 4.
The incident occurred as Marquez braked first, with Bezzecchi seemingly caught off guard and trying to steer away as he began slowing down. Contact was made when Bezzecchi's motorcycle struck Marquez's leg, tearing the fairing off the Aprilia and sending Bezzecchi off into the grass at Turn 4 where he dropped his machine.
The FIM MotoGP Stewards immediately placed the incident under investigation but ultimately concluded that no further action was warranted. Explaining the crash, Bezzecchi stated it was nothing crazy and merely a standard racing incident. "I mean, I was very close, we were very close, and in braking, when he moved a bit, I tried to avoid him," Bezzecchi explained.

The session was briefly red-flagged to allow marshals to clear the debris left on the asphalt. Despite the scary moment and getting briefly stuck under his bike, Bezzecchi quickly rejoined the action and ultimately finished the practice session with the fastest lap time overall of 1m26.775s.
Alex Marquez, who suffered a separate crash later in the session, offered his perspective on the near-miss. "I don't know what happened; you'll have to ask him. I was focused on my own thing. I was on my usual racing line, at my normal pace," Marquez said regarding the Turn 4 collision.
