Marc Marquez wasted no time asserting his authority in the opening practice session of the Japanese MotoGP at Motegi, setting a blistering lap of 1:44.073s to lead the field. The Gresini rider edged out his championship rivals Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi, signaling his intent in the title fight.
Track conditions were far from ideal after earlier rain, leaving a greasy surface that deterred most riders from pushing immediately. It took nearly 15 minutes for the full grid to venture out, with only Somkiat Chantra and the Pramac Yamaha duo of Toprak Razgatlioglu and Jack Miller braving the early laps. Takaaki Nakagami suffered a massive highside on his first flying lap, forcing marshals into action and disrupting several teams' plans.
Once the times began to tumble, Marquez emerged at the top, pipping Martin by a mere 0.099s. Bezzecchi was just half a tenth further back in third, underlining the fierce competitiveness at the sharp end. Alex Marquez completed the session in fourth, while Johann Zarco impressed as the top Honda in fifth. Fabio Quartararo also showed strong pace in sixth on the Yamaha, with Raul Fernandez seventh and Francesco Bagnaia eighth. Fabio Di Giannantonio and Pedro Acosta rounded out the top ten.

Outside the top ten, Diogo Moreira was the last rider within a second of Marquez's benchmark in 11th, with Franco Morbidelli three-tenths adrift in 12th. Ai Ogura, riding at his home Grand Prix, ended up 13th, while Chantra, substituting for the unwell Joan Mir, took 14th. Fermin Aldeguer narrowly beat Razgatlioglu as they finished 15th and 16th.
Brad Binder led a trio of KTMs in 17th, with Maverick Vinales ahead of Tech3 teammate Enea Bastianini, who returned from injury. Luca Marini was 20th, ahead of Alex Rins and Jack Miller, while Nakagami propped up the standings after failing to set an official lap due to his crash.
This opening session set the tone for what promises to be a tightly contested weekend at Motegi. With track conditions still evolving, riders and teams will need to be strategic in the upcoming sessions. Marquez has drawn first blood, but Martin and Bezzecchi are lurking, ready to strike. The Japanese GP is shaping up to be a thrilling chapter in this year's championship battle.
