Marc Marquez has once again become the talk of the MotoGP paddock ahead of the San Marino GP. Not because of his speed on track, but due to a social media post showing the muscle atrophy in his right shoulder. The photo quickly sparked reactions, especially from riders preparing at Misano.
One of the first to speak out was his own brother, Alex Marquez. The Gresini rider hopes Marc's decision to publish the photo will put an end to the wild speculation. "I think you have understood it wrong," he told the media. "In the end, it can become tiring to answer the same question at every grand prix. So, you publish the photo, and that settles the matter."
The speculation was not unfounded. Some media outlets and online forums had suggested that the factory Ducati rider was exaggerating his injury or using it to justify poor results, such as his difficult weekend at Silverstone. Such accusations clearly frustrated the Marquez camp.
Alex believes that showing reality is the best way to silence doubts. "I think it is the best way to settle it, to show what there is, the reality, not to hide it," he stressed. "Because in the end, no matter how many words you say, or try to explain, there comes a point where people may not believe you, or may speculate. With a photo, they cannot speculate."
For Alex, the photo also explains why Marc's performance has fluctuated this season. The injury sustained from a collision with Marco Bezzecchi at the Indonesian GP last year has required two surgeries, the most recent about two months ago. "I think the photo explains many of the things that are being seen this year," Alex said. "A lot of people did not understand it, but it is the reality. The latest injury has changed him a lot, because you have already accumulated too much, but from the previous one [2020] he was already recovering for three years."
Alex added that the recovery process is not as simple as surgery and then winning. "It is not just operating and boom, winning. Right now he is like this, and the doctors do not believe, as Samuel [Antuna] said, that he is going to recover the muscle mass, because there is a lot of atrophy from the number of times they have opened him up," he explained. "But that is what there is. If he wants to continue racing, it is in his hands. And as I have always said, Marc is going to race until he wants to, and until he feels that the suffering is much greater than what he enjoys on the bike."
Despite this, Marc remains competitive. Since his second operation, he has taken four victories and is still in the thick of the title fight. The photo he posted last week serves as a bold statement: his condition may not be ideal, but his determination to keep fighting on track is beyond doubt.
