Marc Marquez maximises Motegi weekend

A brilliant weekend at Motegi not only tightened the world championship battle but also wrote a golden page in the history of the Bologna-based manufacturer. Marc Marquez successfully delivered the 100th premier class victory under Ducati General Manager Gigi Dall'Igna during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend.

This remarkable achievement came after the Spanish rider swept the victories across the weekend's race sessions, including a dominant grand prix performance. The maximum 37-point haul at Motegi cuts the gap to championship leader Jorge Martin to just two points in an increasingly intense title fight this season.

Ever since joining the Borgo Panigale factory in 2013, Dall'Igna has been the mastermind behind a technological revolution that has produced some of the most competitive machinery in grand prix motorcycle racing history. His greatest contribution is clearly visible in the development of the Desmosedici, including the dominant machines that shattered win records in the modern MotoGP era. Marquez himself now boasts 20 victories under the ingenious Italian engineer's leadership, sitting just behind team-mate Francesco Bagnaia, who holds 31.

"Of course, now I’m enjoying what Gigi builds with all his staff because for one person it’s impossible," Marquez told MotoGP.com. "Pero Gigi creates a good team, and now I’m enjoying the work that he has done since he joined Ducati. A lot of experience, a very clever engineer and very special."

This impressive performance at Motegi served as an immediate response from the nine-time world champion after briefly losing the championship lead following the Austrian Grand Prix. Brake issues that previously hampered his pace at the Red Bull Ring were now entirely put behind him. Opting for the hard Michelin rear tire chosen by the majority of the grid following tire evaluations in the sprint, Marquez immediately found the sweet feeling he had been searching for since Aragon.

"[I’m] super happy for the 37 points because it was the target this weekend and we achieve it. It was a tough race, especially the first laps behind Jorge, and then since I lead the race I tried to control the pace," Marquez explained regarding the fierce on-track duel.

"Since Aragon, the feeling has been very good with the bike, always able to understand what I need to do. It’s true that in Austria, I had a brake problem but again, here, without problems, I was able to be competitive and fight with the top guys that are very fast," he concluded.
