Marc Marquez has finally spoken out about his physical condition that he had long kept hidden. The Ducati rider insists he wasn't angry when his team broadcasted his revelation about his right arm in the Silverstone edition of Inside Ducati. For him, that admission became a liberating turning point.
For years, Marquez was known for concealing any sign of weakness. However, after a double victory at Aragon, he posted a gym photo revealing the muscle loss and scarring around his repeatedly injured shoulder. The photo sent shockwaves through the paddock. A few days later, surgeon Samuel Antuna candidly explained that Marquez had lost bicep strength after the accident in Indonesia. “The expression that Marc is currently riding with one and a half arms accurately reflects the current state of his right arm,” Antuna told El Periodico.
The decision to come clean was not without reason. At Silverstone, Marquez had told his team he was “at risk of crashing” because he had no control over his right arm. The footage was later aired in Ducati's documentary series. Instead of being upset, Marquez understood. “I heard that I was angry. No, I wasn't angry because it's content that the fans really like,” he said. But questions about his arm kept haunting him until Aragon. “I was tired of answering, and after the GP I said to my team I want to find a solution.”
The solution came in the form of a photo and an open interview. “I found the correct way. Because it was my idea. My management team always give me feedback but it's something personal. It's the best way to stop the question mark,” Marquez stressed. He added that his physical condition is what it is, but he still enjoys racing and feels competitive. “With what I have I try to do my maximum every weekend.”
While the photo showed the exact toll that seven surgeries have taken on his right arm and shoulder, Marquez, who has re-signed with Ducati until the end of 2028, stressed that continuing to race remains his choice. “The best Marc would be 20 years old with the experience of now! But it's impossible,” he said with a smile. “Now, with the situation I have, I put much more effort into trying to survive in MotoGP. Because the young riders, and other riders that will arrive, are all very fast. So now I need to work more to try to achieve what I want, that is trying to win. Before it was like natural instinct.”
Marquez also made it clear that no one is forcing him. “It's my decision to continue. No one put a knife here and said you must race! At the moment I'm still more or less competitive, I'm enjoyingg I will try to enjoy my passion if I'm competitive.”
This season, Marquez has taken seven wins and could mathematically take the MotoGP title lead for the first time this season from Jorge Martin at Misano this Sunday. If achieved, it would be proof that his determination to keep fighting despite not being in prime condition is paying off.
