Marc Marquez set the pace in an extended Japanese MotoGP warm-up at Motegi, as riders scrambled to complete their first laps of the weekend on Michelin's hard rear tyre. The crucial morning session was added to the schedule following the sudden withdrawal of the soft compound due to blistering issues during Saturday's Sprint.
Teams were forced into a data-gathering frenzy after skipping the heat-resistant reinforced hard specification throughout Friday and Saturday. Marquez wasted no time making the adjustment work, slashing his lap time significantly on the hard rear after initially heading out on the medium compound.
The performance offered a welcome boost for Ducati, which had previously struggled to extract performance from the same tyre specification during the round in Austria. Meanwhile, championship leader Jorge Martin found better rhythm on the medium compound, finishing the morning third as he looks to defend his razor-thin seven-point title lead.
