Mandalika Safety Warning, Fabio Quartararo Slams Gravel Trap Design

Fabio Quartararo endured a dramatic start to the Indonesian Grand Prix weekend at the Mandalika Circuit after suffering a heavy crash during Friday practice. The French rider admitted to feeling sore and bruised on the left side of his body following the high-speed off, though fortunately avoiding any major bone fractures and remaining confident about stepping back aboard his Yamaha machine for Saturday's action.

Despite the high-drama incident that disrupted his program, the 2021 world champion managed to secure a direct spot in Q2. It was a positive takeaway from a physically demanding day where he also found encouraging feelings with his prototype. However, the Frenchman immediately shifted the spotlight toward the dangerous condition of the Indonesian circuit's gravel trap runoff area, demanding urgent modifications to prevent severe accidents in the future.

Speaking to collaborator Manuel Pecino, the Iwata factory rider detailed how the crash unfolded so quickly. "A little sore on the left side. The crash was fast, but it wasn't big. I just ended up on the ground," he explained regarding his physical condition. He noted that the impact caused muscular discomfort, but he considered himself lucky that nothing was broken, preferring to assess his physical state fully after a night's rest.

Even with the lingering pain, Quartararo successfully completed the day's running and booked his place in the second qualifying session, easing the pressure slightly ahead of Saturday. "At least being in Q2 makes you feel better. After a crash like that, having to start over and do two time attacks is not the best way to get back on the bike, but honestly, I feel pretty good," he added.

Beyond his physical well-being, Quartararo strongly insisted on the necessity of reviewing the run-off area where the accident occurred, pointing out that the step between the asphalt and the gravel creates a dangerous launchpad effect. As reported by Motosan.es, he urged circuit officials to make immediate changes to ensure rider safety when sliding off the racing line.
