The skies over Sepang opened up in dramatic fashion as a torrential downpour and thunderstorms struck just 45 minutes before the scheduled start. Standing water quickly flooded the circuit, forcing race control into an inevitable delay as the grid faced a soaking wet Formula 1 showdown.
This unprecedented scenario delivers a massive leap into the unknown for the entire field tackling the first wet session under the new regulations. Carlos Sainz had previously highlighted how tricky the power unit deployment and wet compound characteristics would prove in such demanding conditions.
The medical car completed exploratory laps early on, confirming that the track surface was far too treacherous for a standing start. Meanwhile, the FIA weather radar temporarily went offline just before the initial start time, adding an extra layer of chaos to the pre-race tension.

Fans now await a 10-minute warning with safety car laps likely to precede the eventual getaway. Pierre Gasly warned earlier that the complex machinery could easily turn this wet opener into a genuine race of elimination.
