Fresh aerial footage of the Madrid Formula 1 circuit has emerged, captured from a police helicopter as Formula 3 runners tested the new venue. Madrid replaces Barcelona as host of the Spanish Grand Prix from 2026 under a 10-year deal with F1. The newly built Madring track is set to debut on 11-13 September.
Earlier, Ferrari became the first F1 team to test at the Madrid circuit, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc sharing the SF-26 around the 5.416km layout during a filming day in July. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz of Williams was the first F1 driver to complete a lap of the new Madrid track, sampling the banked 'La Monumental' corner in a Ford Mustang GT back in May.
Formula 3 has been conducting a test in Madrid this week, with the Spanish capital also hosting the F3 season finale. Local police shared unique birds-eye footage of the test captured from their helicopter, offering fans a spectacular new perspective of the circuit.
Freddie Slater Impressed by Track's Character
Audi junior Freddie Slater, who topped the timesheets on the opening day, praised the new circuit. "I think it was a really positive day. I think this track is incredible to drive, it's a bit old-school, has got some interesting corners and it's got a lot of character to it," he said.
"It's probably one of the most enjoyable on a push lap on the calendar. I'm just enjoying it. I'm having fun. Today has been a really positive day. I'm just learning about the track and trying to adapt my driving style to it and also adapt the car a bit to it." Slater emphasized the importance of data collection on a brand-new circuit with no prior references.
Slater added that his experience on street circuits like Macau and Monaco helped him adapt: "It's about going out, being on the limit, but not being too over the limit that you end up risking crashing. I love the whole thing. I think it's one of the best tracks I've driven, with character like Macau or Monaco." He named the Turn 5 and 6 chicane as a personal favorite.
