Motorsport fans were treated to an absolute thriller as Lucas Auer secured a brilliant victory in the opening race of the DTM season finale at Hockenheim. Piloting the Landgraf Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3, the Austrian driver mastered a chaotic race filled with intense wheel-to-wheel battles and high-drama incidents from the moment the lights went out.
The action erupted immediately on the opening lap as Thierry Vermeulen and Ricardo Feller collided ahead of turn two, resulting in front-end damage for Feller who subsequently collected three penalty laps. The tension escalated on the second lap when a fierce duel for the lead between Auer and Luca Engstler saw them touch multiple times before Engstler crashed heavily into the barriers.
Due to the severe damage inflicted on the safety barriers by the impact, race control had no choice but to throw the red flag, halting the action temporarily for repairs. Once the barrier was secured, the race resumed behind the safety car, immediately igniting high-stakes strategic battles throughout the competitive field.
Pit stop drama also played a pivotal role as WINWARD Racing lost roughly ten crucial seconds during Maro Engel's service. Later in the race, a fierce scrap for the final podium spot between Engel and Marco Wittmann saw Engel push the BMW driver wide, prompting race control to order a position swap between the seasoned veterans.
When the checkered flag dropped, Mirko Bortolotti claimed second place in his Lamborghini despite slowing down on the slowing-down lap, while Marco Wittmann rounded out the podium positions for Schubert Motorsport.
