Lewis Hamilton has warned that Ferrari must continue pushing to close the gap to Mercedes despite securing his strongest result since joining the Italian team. The seven-time world champion finished second in the Canadian Grand Prix, delivering Ferrari's most competitive performance in recent races.

Starting fifth on the grid, Hamilton immediately benefited from McLaren's strategic gamble. Both McLaren drivers began the race on intermediate tyres despite largely dry conditions, forcing them into early pit stops and allowing Hamilton to move into contention near the front of the field.

However, the Ferrari driver still faced a significant challenge from Max Verstappen. Hamilton spent much of the race chasing the Dutchman before steadily reducing the gap during the closing stages. Superior pace eventually allowed him to complete a decisive overtake and secure second place behind race winner Kimi Antonelli.

The podium represented an important milestone for Hamilton after a challenging period since arriving at Ferrari. While encouraged by the progress made in Montreal, the Briton stressed that the team cannot afford to slow its development programme if it hopes to challenge Mercedes consistently throughout the season.

"These guys have welcomed me with open arms and it's been pretty tough for the past year and a bit. So, to finally find our sweet spot and have a good weekend, it has been an amazing feeling to be back up here, especially with these guys being so quick and actually got to have a race with Max, which was great," Hamilton said.

The result was particularly significant given the competitive landscape at the Canadian Grand Prix. Mercedes introduced a major upgrade package in Montreal and immediately demonstrated improved pace, while Ferrari continued to rely on the development package first introduced at the Miami Grand Prix.

Hamilton believes Ferrari's performance at a circuit heavily dependent on straight-line efficiency offers encouragement for the remainder of the campaign. Montreal's layout traditionally rewards strong power delivery and top-speed performance, areas where Ferrari has not consistently held an advantage this season.

"It's definitely encouraging because Mercedes brought a big upgrade this weekend. A lot of people brought upgrades here. We brought our big one in Miami and the team are working really hard back at the factory. We've hopefully got some other bits coming along the way," Hamilton explained.

"Considering this is a real straight-line street circuit and we managed to hold on and get this result, it definitely gives me high hopes for what's ahead. But we've got to keep pushing and keep trying to extract more."

The Canadian Grand Prix result moved Hamilton to within three points of team-mate Charles Leclerc in the drivers' standings. More importantly for Ferrari, it provided evidence that the Scuderia may be moving back toward the front of the field as the 2026 championship battle continues.
