Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Lewis Hamilton has shown a marked improvement with Scuderia Ferrari at the start of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with team principal Fred Vasseur confirming that their working relationship has evolved into a significantly stronger position compared to last year.
After joining Ferrari in 2025, Hamilton endured a difficult debut campaign without a single podium finish. However, that trajectory has shifted in the opening rounds of 2026, highlighted by a third-place finish in China. The improvement reflects stronger integration within the team structure and a deeper understanding of the car’s technical characteristics.

Vasseur underlined that Hamilton’s early involvement in the development of the 2026 car has been a decisive factor in his increased comfort and performance. Unlike his first season—when he joined after the car had already been finalised—Hamilton contributed to the project from its initial stages, including simulator work in mid-2025.
“Honestly, it’s always much easier the second one, because you are part of the project,” Vasseur told media including RacingNews365.
He further explained that the internal dynamics within Ferrari have also improved, enabling Hamilton to operate more effectively with engineers and key personnel across departments.
“He feels also a bit more involved in the project than he was one year ago. When he joined the team in January, the car was there. He knows everybody a little bit more, the relationship is getting better and better. It’s also easier for him to deal with people and to work with everybody,” he added.
Despite the internal progress, Ferrari continues to trail Mercedes, which has secured victories in the opening two rounds of the 2026 season. Closing this performance gap remains the primary objective for the Maranello-based team.
Vasseur emphasised that Ferrari’s development approach is centred on incremental gains, targeting marginal improvements across multiple performance areas to gradually reduce the deficit to their main rival.
“Step by step, we have to do marginal gains because it’s like this that we will close the gap,” he stated.
With Hamilton now more embedded within Ferrari’s technical and operational framework, the team sees a clearer pathway to improving competitiveness. Consistency in results and effective development execution will be critical as Ferrari aims to challenge Mercedes more directly in the upcoming races.
