Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has joked that he will be forced to extend his Formula 1 career into his mid-forties in order to achieve his ultimate dream of racing in Africa. This comes following the recent announcement that the world championship is reviving an African Grand Prix as part of a major 10-year deal hosted in Rwanda.
Formula 1 has not visited the African continent since the 1993 South African Grand Prix, and the veteran driver has consistently led calls for the sport to return there before he officially retires from top-flight motorsport. While no specific date has been officially set yet, the event is due to join the F1 calendar during the early 2030s, meaning Hamilton will be at least 45 years old by the time the lights go out.
Speaking ahead of the United States Grand Prix weekend, the British star detailed the relentless behind-the-scenes lobbying he has carried out over many years with key stakeholders, including F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, to ensure the continent finally secures its rightful place on the global racing map.
"I’ve been advocating for a race in Africa for many, many, many years, and countless meetings with the stakeholders, so many meetings with Stefano at his office in London, but also race weekends," Hamilton explained regarding his persistent efforts with various international presidents and executives.
Set to embark on a new chapter with Ferrari, the star driver remains hopeful that the upcoming grand prix will successfully showcase the rich culture and vibrant communities of the African continent to a massive global audience of millions of passionate fans.
