Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari are facing increasing technical pressure to close the early-season performance gap to Mercedes in the opening phase of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
Although Ferrari has emerged as Mercedes’ closest challenger so far, the W17 package has demonstrated a clear advantage over the SF-26, particularly in race conditions. During the Chinese Grand Prix, George Russell was able to build a margin of nearly 20 seconds over Hamilton in the second half of the race, despite earlier battling both Hamilton and his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc.
Technical analysis indicates that Mercedes currently holds an edge in straight-line speed and overall aerodynamic efficiency, allowing for more consistent performance across race stints. Ferrari, by contrast, has shown improved competitiveness in qualifying trim but continues to lack race pace, with an estimated deficit of four to five tenths per lap compared to its main rival.

In terms of development trajectory, Ferrari is not expected to introduce a major upgrade package until the Miami Grand Prix, following calendar adjustments caused by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian rounds. This delay increases pressure on the team to extract maximum performance from its current package while preparing a significant step forward in downforce, efficiency, and power unit performance.
“I definitely feel that it’s more in sight than ever before. Last year, it couldn’t have been further away, but now we are getting closer, especially in qualifying,” said Lewis Hamilton.
“But in race trim, they still have about four to five tenths on us. That is a huge gap to close, in terms of downforce, efficiency, and power.”
Hamilton also underlined his confidence in Ferrari’s technical group at Maranello to deliver the required improvements, while acknowledging the scale of the challenge ahead.
“That’s a huge upgrade we need to find. But I truly believe in everyone back at Maranello that it’s not impossible to overcome,” he added.
With a measurable performance deficit still evident, Ferrari now faces a critical development phase to remain competitive in the fight for victories. Attention will focus on the effectiveness of its upcoming upgrade package, which could prove decisive in determining whether the team can challenge Mercedes before the championship enters a more defining stage of the 2026 season.
