Lewis Hamilton has been summoned to the FIA stewards after allegedly impeding Gabriel Bortoleto during second practice for the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.
The Ferrari driver will meet with the stewards after FP2 to explain the incident at Turn 9. The situation occurred during a busy period in the middle of the session.
Turn 9 comes at the end of a short straight in Sepang’s middle sector, with enough space on the left side of the circuit for a driver on a cooldown lap to move aside and allow another car through.
However, Bortoleto felt that Hamilton had impeded him as the Audi driver approached the Ferrari. Bortoleto expressed his frustration over team radio.
"What the fuck is this guy doing, man?" Bortoleto said over the radio.
After being told that Hamilton was on a cooldown lap, Bortoleto replied: "I know, but he sees me coming and he just keeps blocking."
Hamilton subsequently informed his team that he was experiencing an issue with his mirror. The Ferrari driver said he could not see through his right-hand mirror and asked the team to keep him updated on the traffic behind.
"I can’t see through my right mirror, so keep me up to date," Hamilton told his team.
Under FIA regulations, impeding incidents during free practice are treated differently from those in qualifying or the race because lap times set during practice have no direct sporting consequence.
When a driver fails to react to mirrors or radio information, stewards typically have the option of issuing a reprimand or warning. Financial penalties, meanwhile, can be directed at the team when the root cause is deemed to be late or inadequate communication over the radio.
