Fittipaldi Backs Hamilton for Serious Title Challenge in Second Half

Formula 1 legend Emerson Fittipaldi has thrown his full support behind Lewis Hamilton to mount a serious title challenge in the second half of the season, saying it would be "extremely good" to see Hamilton and Ferrari push Mercedes all the way.

Hamilton currently sits second in the drivers' championship, 50 points behind Kimi Antonelli, who has won six of the 11 races so far. Despite the gap, Hamilton's performances have been impressive, highlighted by his maiden Ferrari victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.

That win ended Hamilton's long wait for a first triumph with the Scuderia and proved he still has the pace to fight at the front. Throughout the season, he has consistently finished on the podium, although a few costly penalties have prevented him from closing the gap to Antonelli.

Remarkably, Hamilton is ahead of George Russell in the standings, despite Mercedes' dominance this year. This underlines Hamilton's ability to extract the maximum from a Ferrari car that still trails its rival in pure performance.

This season represents Hamilton's best opportunity to claim an unprecedented eighth drivers' title since 2021, and Ferrari has no intention of holding back. The team plans to continue its aggressive upgrade strategy to close the gap to Mercedes.

Fittipaldi, a two-time world champion, is eager to see Hamilton back in title contention. "I really hope Lewis challenges for the championship," he told the official F1 website. "It'd be extremely good to see Lewis and Ferrari running stronger, to dice with Mercedes."

He also praised Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur, with whom he worked in A1 Grand Prix. "I have a lot of respect for Fred. He's a good guy, a top guy. I think now he knows the Italians well! So, it should be good, the second part," he added.
