Lewis Hamilton Delivers Blunt Criticism on Modern F1 Circuit Design
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
More F1 circuits are switching to tarmac run-offs instead of the more traditional gravel setup

Veteran driver Lewis Hamilton has voiced his strong disapproval regarding a prominent feature of modern Formula 1 circuits, specifically lamenting the widespread replacement of traditional gravel traps with vast asphalt run-off areas.

Having made his competitive debut back in 2007, the British champion belongs to an experienced generation of racers who remember when pushing track limits came with immediate, punishing consequences.

Speaking during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend when asked about the physical demands of different eras, he quickly shifted the conversation toward how circuit architecture has dramatically evolved away from natural hazards.

"There are a lot of changes which have come over time, like all of these run-off areas, which I dislike personally," the star driver representing Ferrari stated clearly when addressing the layout shifts.

He admitted missing an era defined by less asphalt and more grass or gravel. "But obviously that’s not the way it is today," he added, acknowledging the pragmatic safety and multi-series requirements driving modern venue designs.

Venues like the Circuit of the Americas in Austin exemplify this philosophy, where massive tarmac run-offs allow cars to safely rejoin the racing line after running wide, contrasting sharply with the unforgiving nature of older tracks.
