Talented young driver Leonardo Fornaroli is set to shoulder a dual role with the McLaren squad for the upcoming 2027 motorsport season. Alongside continuing his duties as the Formula 1 reserve and third driver, he will also take on a prestigious new challenge by making his World Endurance Championship debut behind the wheel of the team's brand-new Hypercar.
This announcement cements the Woking-based manufacturer's long-term faith in the Italian driver, bridging his single-seater development with a high-profile sports car program. Throughout the previous season, he steadily built a robust relationship with the squad through Testing of Previous Cars sessions, two Grand Prix free practice appearances, and extensive simulator work.
According to Motorsport.com, the ongoing F1 program has served as an invaluable stepping stone for his career progression. The wealth of technical knowledge and mileage gathered in the grand prix paddock will now directly benefit his transition into the fiercely competitive world of endurance racing.

"The programme McLaren has given me this year has been incredible," he stated. "The TPC days I've completed with the team, the two FP1 sessions and all the work I've done in the simulator have been extremely valuable experiences. Every time I work with the team, I learn something new. I want to thank McLaren for the support and the development opportunities they're giving me."
Moving into the endurance racing arena will inevitably require a period of rapid learning, particularly concerning traffic management, complex strategy, and mastering a completely brand-new machine. Nevertheless, he remains confident that his grounding in elite single-seaters has equipped him with the right toolkit to tackle the challenge head-on.
The Italian prospect has already sampled the team's Hypercar, noting how entering a closed-cockpit prototype offered sensations entirely unique compared to his previous racing experiences. Further on-track testing sessions are slated to accelerate his adaptation and developmental workload ahead of the official WEC campaign.
