Iker Lecuona stamped his authority on the opening day of WorldSBK at Cremona, topping both FP1 and FP2, while Nicolo Bulega endured a tough Friday with two crashes. The sun was shining at the Cremona circuit, but the track temperature differed between sessions, posing a challenge for riders and technicians alike. The battle between Lecuona and Bulega, teammates at Aruba Racing-Ducati, was immediate.
In FP1, Lecuona set the pace with a 1'28.278, edging out Bulega by a tenth of a second. The session saw several crashes, including Yari Montella at Turn 13, which forced him to pit for repairs. Bulega also went down at Turn 10 near the end of the session but was unhurt.
Lorenzo Baldassarri took advantage to finish third, followed by Sam Lowes in fourth. Meanwhile, Alvaro Bautista had to settle for ninth. The Spanish rider will be eager to perform well at Cremona, as his team, Barni Racing, races at home.
In FP2, Montella crashed again, this time at Turn 1. Remy Gardner suffered the same fate at the same corner, bringing out the red flag. Although Gardner was fine, his bike was not. Alex Lowes then crashed between Turns 5 and 6, requiring medical attention.
Bulega briefly led by 72 milliseconds over Lecuona, but Lecuona responded with a 1'28.108. Unfortunately, Bulega crashed again at Turn 8, an unusual sight for the WorldSBK championship leader. Lecuona remained unchallenged at the top until the end, while Xavi Vierge and Jake Dixon also crashed without serious injury.
With this result, Lecuona demonstrated his dominance at Cremona, while Bulega must regroup ahead of qualifying and the races. The WorldSBK title fight is heating up, and Cremona is proving to be a crucial battleground.
