Lecuona: Bautista's Woes Not Just Down to WorldSBK Weight Rule

Iker Lecuona has questioned whether the WorldSBK minimum weight rule is truly the reason behind Alvaro Bautista's recent struggles. He believes other factors are at play.

Bautista is the only rider on the 2026 grid affected by the rule, which forces him to carry 7kg of ballast due to his lighter frame. Introduced in 2024 after his dominant 2023 season with 27 wins in 36 races, the rule has coincided with a sharp decline in his performance. This year, riding for the satellite Barni Ducati team, he has managed just one podium, a wet Race 2 victory at Phillip Island, and has not finished inside the top six since a fourth place in the Superpole Race at Balaton Park.

Lecuona, who replaced Bautista at the factory Ducati team and recently claimed his first WorldSBK win at Donington, argues that 7kg is not enough to cause such a significant drop. "Alvaro has the same bike as us. Yes, he has more weight, but to what extent? I claim that's not enough to make him fall back 15 or 20 seconds," he said on the Duralavita podcast, as reported by Speedweek.

However, Lecuona acknowledged that ballast could be more challenging on tracks with many direction changes, like Balaton Park. "Logically, it could be more difficult for him on a track like Balaton with many changes of direction. Things went better at Assen, but I don't think the ballast is enough to set him back that far," he added.

Lecuona also pointed out that being a smaller rider has both advantages and disadvantages beyond just weight. "I think there's more to it than just 7kg more weight on a bike. If a rider is smaller, there are advantages and disadvantages, and ballast doesn't help – certainly not, because it changes inertia. With a gap of two or three seconds, I can understand that. I don't think so when you're 15 or 20 seconds behind," he explained.

Bautista currently sits ninth in the standings, and his frustration with the rule continues. He recently took to social media to criticize the championship's 2027-2030 roadmap for not addressing the minimum weight rule. Lecuona's comments add fuel to the debate, suggesting that Bautista's struggles may be more about adapting to a new team and bike than the weight penalty alone. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether Bautista can turn things around or if his decline is here to stay.
