Charles Leclerc could not hide his frustration after the qualifying session for the Spanish Grand Prix ended with him in fifth place, just 6 milliseconds behind his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton. Such a tiny margin, yet enough to force him to start from the third row, while Hamilton will line up fourth. The Monegasque driver appeared downcast when facing the media, though he insisted that his potential had been maximized.
“The feelings were quite good, but we paid a little for the power unit, and that has nothing to do with the team. If I look at today, I think I maximized pretty much everything. There was still a bit of performance here and there, because the gap to pole is only about a tenth and a half,” Leclerc told Sky Italia. He also highlighted the engine specification difference between himself and Hamilton, which cost him time on the straights.
High Tyre Degradation a Challenge
Looking ahead to Sunday's race, Leclerc predicted that tyre degradation would be a crucial factor. “I think there's little doubt that degradation will be very high for everyone. We still have to see if the track has improved or remains like Friday, which could make the race very difficult,” he added. He hopes to maximize his starting position to achieve a better result.
Speaking to Canal+, Leclerc stressed the importance of a good start. “The lap was pretty OK. There were some corners where I didn't put everything together, as I said on the radio, but I think that's the case for everyone and I have no regrets. We'll try to make a good start, because overtaking will be very difficult,” he explained. He also admitted that he might have exceeded the limit in some corners, which cost him time.
Speaking to F1TV, the Ferrari driver added, “Maybe I went over the limit in some corners and lost a bit, plus I lose on the straights due to the engine spec, but that was down to me. I think we still did a good job and maximized our potential.”
With such a narrow margin, Leclerc is in a difficult but not hopeless position. He must leverage strategy and consistency to climb onto the podium. The Spanish race will test Leclerc's ability to manage tyres and seize every opportunity.
