Charles Leclerc, the Ferrari driver, has received surprising criticism from former driver David Coulthard regarding the presence of his dog in the Formula 1 paddock. Coulthard believes Leclerc's approach is excessive and reminds him that F1 is a serious business, not a weekend picnic.
On the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard said, "He's good looking, he's got the family, a baby on the way, a dog in the paddock. My opinion is that's all a bit too much, frankly. It's not a weekend away picnic, is it? It's a Grand Prix, it's a serious business. It's a dangerous business, but that's probably me being of an older generation."
Leclerc is often seen accompanied by his wife Alexandra and their miniature long-haired dachshund, Leo, at various grands prix. Their togetherness often captures fans' attention.
Coulthard's criticism prompted a response from Brittny Button, wife of 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button. On social media, she wrote, "As an ex WAG, I'm happy to see that Formula One is embracing the drivers' partners/families more. The paddock was not a very welcoming place for women for so long. In my opinion, this is a great and positive change."
Leclerc and Alexandra are expecting their first child together. In a video shared by Ferrari, Leclerc said, "I'm going to become a dad, I'm very proud of that."
On track, Leclerc has claimed one victory this season and currently sits fifth in the drivers' championship, 24 points behind his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton, who also has one win. Leclerc will start second on the grid for today's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, seeking his second win of the campaign and his 10th career F1 victory.
