Lawson Praised by Red Bull After Stellar Zandvoort Cameo

Liam Lawson returned to the Red Bull garage in unforgettable fashion. The New Zealander earned praise from team principal Laurent Mekies after an impressive stand-in performance at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Lawson was called back to the senior team after Isack Hadjar suffered a wrist injury. Yuki Tsunoda moved to Racing Bulls to fill the gap. This was his first race with Red Bull since being demoted early last year, and the pressure was immediate.

But Lawson answered every doubt. In a single practice session, he quickly felt at home in the car. He finished 11th in the Sprint and started from the same position for the main race. Yet his best performances came in qualifying and the Grand Prix itself.

During qualifying, Lawson was just a tenth off his teammate Max Verstappen. A monumental result for a driver in his first weekend back. His form continued on Sunday, as he became Red Bull's only hope after Verstappen's heavy crash.

Though he couldn't challenge the front-runners, Lawson maximized the RB22's potential to finish seventh. He was the best of the rest behind the top four teams, outperforming other midfield drivers.

Mekies didn't hide his admiration. "Liam has done a good job stepping into the car," he said. "It's never easy to jump into a different team and car for a race like that. He was only a tenth from Max in qualifying and took the points available with seventh."

Lawson currently sits ninth in the drivers' standings, making him the best driver outside the top four teams. Liam Lawson has proven his talent once again, and Red Bull may reconsider letting him go.
