Lando Norris turned heads last week, not for his on-track F1 exploits, but for his opportunity to test McLaren's Hypercar at Algarve Circuit in Portugal. The reigning F1 world champion completed 38 laps in the MCL-HY, a car set to compete in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) from 2027. While it may seem like a casual outing, Norris insists the experience provided valuable insights for his F1 career.
For Lando Norris, driving a Hypercar was more than just a break from routine. He was impressed by the depth of setup options compared to F1. "The level of detail they go into is pretty crazy," he told Motorsport.com. "They have, in some situations, a lot more scope to do things with the car than what we're allowed to do in Formula 1. As much as you think Formula 1 is 'you can do whatever you want', it's not quite that. With how you can change the toys and set up the car itself, it's actually quite a bit more limited than you can do with the Hypercar in terms of electronics and all of these things."
Norris even likened the Hypercar's technology to old-school F1. "It's a bit more like old-school Formula 1, when it was a bit more just a free-for-all on what you could do," he added. "Of course, it's a very different car, it's quite a heavy car, so adapting to that; obviously quite a bit less downforce, but it still feels like a quick car, so it's still exciting." As a reference, Hypercar lap times at Spa-Francorchamps 6 Hours 2025 saw pole at 2m00.653s, while F1 2026's Kimi Antonelli did 1m44.361s and F2's Rafael Camara 1m56.306s. The data shows Hypercars are slower, but not without challenge.
At Algarve, Norris was joined by two of McLaren's 2027 drivers, Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor. Their presence gave Norris a chance to learn from different driving styles. "Everything I do, really, even when I drive other cars, is always to try and learn things – understand different styles, learn from the other drivers that I met over there, and see what I can take onboard to help me drive better this weekend," he explained. "So it's always a good opportunity, especially to stay within the McLaren family."
Nevertheless, Norris stressed his priority remains Formula 1. When asked about a potential outing at the 2027 Le Mans 24 Hours, he firmly denied it. "It's not something I've been thinking about, at all," he insisted. "All my focus is still on F1, and will always be. I'll never sacrifice something in Formula 1 for something else. If there's a chance that things can work out, maybe, but I don't know if this is next year, the year after, three years, four years – I have no idea."
The test was also significant for McLaren as they prepare for their WEC 2027 entry. Feedback from a driver of Norris's caliber is invaluable for car development. Despite only 38 laps, the data collected can help the team understand the car's characteristics and accelerate development. McLaren has yet to confirm their Hypercar driver lineup, but the presence of Jensen and Vanthoor offers a hint.
For Norris, this experience may not drastically change his F1 driving, but it provides a new perspective. Adapting to a heavier car with less downforce hones sensitivity and grip management. This could prove valuable when he returns to the McLaren F1 cockpit, especially in high-precision race situations.
Clearly, Norris's brief Hypercar adventure shows that top drivers are always hungry for learning. While his main focus is defending his F1 title, he hasn't closed the door on future exploration. But for now, all energy is on Formula 1. We'll see if this test yields tangible benefits on track.
