Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Lando Norris heads into the 2026 Formula 1 season as the reigning world champion after securing his first title last year with the McLaren F1 Team. The British driver began his championship-winning campaign with victory at the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Circuit.
Norris claimed the win in difficult wet conditions, finishing ahead of Max Verstappen and George Russell. The result marked a significant milestone as it was the first time Norris had led the drivers’ championship standings during his Formula 1 career.
However, the Melbourne victory also places Norris next in line in an unusual pattern associated with the Australian Grand Prix. Over the past three editions at Albert Park, the driver who won the race in the previous year failed to finish when returning to the venue the following season.

The sequence began with Charles Leclerc, who won the Australian Grand Prix during the early stages of the 2022 season with Scuderia Ferrari. When the championship returned to Melbourne in 2023, Leclerc was eliminated on the opening lap after a collision with Lance Stroll.
That race was ultimately won by Verstappen as he continued a dominant campaign with Red Bull Racing. Yet the Dutch driver also fell victim to the trend the following year when a mechanical issue forced him into retirement during the Australian Grand Prix.
Verstappen’s retirement opened the door for Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to claim victory, marking one of his two grand prix wins that season. But when the championship returned to Albert Park the following year, Sainz also failed to finish after spinning off in wet conditions behind the safety car.
Attention now turns to Norris as the reigning winner of the Melbourne race and the defending world champion. Whether he will become the fourth consecutive driver to retire from the Australian Grand Prix one year after winning it will be answered when the 2026 Formula 1 season begins in Melbourne this weekend.
