Lando Norris Explains Wet Weather Mastery for Sao Paulo Grand Paulo Pole
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Lando Norris took pole in the tracherous conditions at Interlagos on Saturday

Formula 1 action at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos delivered another dramatic, weather-affected session that thoroughly tested the grid's elite drivers. Amid torrential downpours that halted proceedings for over an hour, Lando Norris masterfully navigated the treacherous conditions to clinch pole position for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The current 2026 campaign has proven testing for McLaren, with both drivers acknowledging the inherent handling difficulties of the MCL40 charger. However, the British contender demonstrated remarkable adaptability, figuring out how to extract maximum performance from his machinery almost instantly as the rain began to fall.

Securing back-to-back poles at Interlagos under vastly contrasting circumstances compared to previous years highlighted his growing maturity. Facing his maiden wet-weather run aboard the MCL40 this season, the championship contender had to quickly master multiple tire compounds while battling intense gusty winds during his flying laps.

"Well, it has been a long day; it has been a great qualifying," Norris told Sky Sports F1. "Obviously, to be on pole again here two years in a row is in different conditions to last year, but I am very happy." The shifting weather patterns demanded absolute precision from every single driver in the paddock.

Strategic timing ultimately dictated the outcome of the session. By posting clean laps early before track conditions deteriorated, the British ace secured the benchmark time while rivals encountered traffic and worsening downpours that forced the entire grid to abandon their final attempts.

"It was not easy conditions out there, especially when you know it is going to rain a lot more. It was about getting two laps in at the beginning, not making any mistakes, and that is exactly what we did, so it has been a very good day," he concluded.

Following grid penalties for George Russell, newly crowned World Champion Kimi Antonelli will join his fellow countryman on the front row, setting up an enthralling battle when the lights go out.
