KTM has firmly rejected the proposed single-bike rule in MotoGP but supports the introduction of a Formula 1-style cost cap. The stance was voiced by KTM CEO Gottfried Neumeister at the Red Bull Ring, Austria. He insists that cost savings must not come at the expense of the racing spectacle.
Neumeister revealed he was "completely against" the single-bike rule as it would disadvantage riders and reduce MotoGP's appeal. "It's about riders being able to go to the limit, being able to run back after a crash and jump on the next one," he said. For him, that aspect is an integral part of MotoGP's DNA.
Nevertheless, KTM is open to the cost cap idea being studied by Dorna and Liberty Media. Neumeister sees a cost cap as a positive step if implemented correctly. "I think if you do it in the right way, it's a good thing. We can't just ask for more money; as manufacturers, we also need to contribute," he added.
One example of savings Neumeister proposed is a single fuel supplier for MotoGP's 2027 100% non-fossil fuel. Currently, each manufacturer develops its own solution, which Neumeister says is costly and a headache. "Why not streamline something which does not kill the show and that you don't even see?" he said. He believes fans won't feel shortchanged if all teams use the same fuel.
Neumeister also stressed that savings should focus on areas invisible to fans, such as fuel development, not on visible aspects like the number of bikes. He affirmed KTM's commitment to delivering the best show for MotoGP fans.
Previously, MotoGP Deputy CEO Carlos Ezpeleta confirmed that an F1-style cost cap is being studied for the future. Neumeister welcomes this provided all parties agree. "I don't think the cap in F1 is always the true cap. Nevertheless, it brought to all teams at least a basis," he concluded.
