Kimi Antonelli Takes Silverstone Pole as Russell Survives

Kimi Antonelli claimed pole position for the 2026 British Grand Prix after topping qualifying at Silverstone.

The Formula 1 championship leader delivered a best lap of 1m28.111s at the end of Q3. That was enough to put him clear of the Ferrari pair and strengthen Mercedes' momentum after his earlier Sprint victory.

Charles Leclerc emerged as Antonelli's closest rival and secured a front-row start. Lewis Hamilton qualified third, but was unable to reproduce the pace that had carried him to Sprint pole on Friday.

The result creates an important strategic setup for the main race. Antonelli holds track position from pole, while Ferrari has two cars directly behind him to pressure Mercedes from the start and through the opening stint.

George Russell qualified fourth for Mercedes despite facing a scare in Q1. Russell hit the barrier after an unusual lock-up, but was still able to continue the session and remain in the fight at the front.

The pole is Antonelli's fifth of the 2026 F1 season. In championship terms, it reinforces his position as the strongest one-lap performer of the campaign and gives Mercedes a major opportunity to control the race from the front row.

Attention now turns to the start at Silverstone. Antonelli has the positional advantage, but pressure from Leclerc, Hamilton and Russell means the race remains open, particularly if Ferrari can use both cars to attack Mercedes strategically.
