Kimi Antonelli says he is ready to fight after spending the early part of his Monza weekend assisting Mercedes team-mate George Russell. For the Italian, his home grand prix has taken on an unexpected shape.

The rookie arrived at Monza knowing he would start from the back of the grid due to a planned engine change penalty. That reality forced him to recalibrate his entire approach to the weekend.

After Russell selflessly moved aside to let Antonelli chase Lando Norris at Zandvoort last time out, the roles were reversed in qualifying at Monza. Antonelli took on a supporting role, providing a crucial tow to help his team-mate secure pole position.

Although Pierre Gasly's shock performance meant Russell could only manage second, Antonelli now turns his full attention to his own recovery drive. It's a challenge he embraces with the mentality of a true fighter.

The Odd Feeling Behind Team Orders

Antonelli described his qualifying experience at Monza as very, very weird. He had to hold back and focus on helping George rather than chasing his own lap time.

"I had to do my job, which was to help George, and I tried my best to help as much as possible," he said. It's clearly not an ideal position for a driver hungry for victory.

His lap in Q3 felt strange too, as he was carrying significantly more fuel than usual and had to be extra cautious to avoid any mistake that could jeopardise the team's plan, especially when giving the tow on the final lap.

"Obviously mixed feelings, but it is what it is, and we're ready to fight tomorrow," Antonelli asserted. A statement that immediately sparks curiosity about his race-day charge.

High Stakes in the Championship Battle

Amid the intense rivalry, Antonelli actually leads the drivers' standings with a comfortable margin over both Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Yet, team unity appears to be the priority at Mercedes.

Antonelli stressed that everyone in the team is aligned on this approach. After Russell was a good team player in Zandvoort, he has now returned the favour by doing what the team asked of him at Monza.

"Of course, in the race, it's going to be steep for both of our cars, but we were very clear on this: when we can, we help each other, especially in these kinds of situations where I had nothing to win, and he was fighting for pole," he explained.

With a spirit of reciprocity and burning determination, Antonelli is ready to fight his way through the field. Will he showcase his class in front of his home crowd? We'll find out in the race.
