Kimi Antonelli believes his battle with George Russell at the Canadian Grand Prix would have continued all the way to the chequered flag had the British driver not suffered a power unit failure. According to Antonelli, the intra-team fight at Mercedes was still too closely matched to predict a clear winner before Russell's retirement.
The race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve produced one of the most captivating battles of the 2026 season. Antonelli and Russell exchanged the lead multiple times during the opening half of the race, engaging in a relentless wheel-to-wheel contest that highlighted Mercedes' superiority over the rest of the field.
The duel came to an abrupt conclusion on lap 30 when Russell's power unit failed while he was leading the race. The retirement immediately removed Antonelli's biggest challenger and cleared the path for the Italian to secure his fourth consecutive Formula 1 victory.

The win also carried historic significance. Antonelli became the first driver in Formula 1 history to win his first four grand prix victories consecutively, while extending his championship advantage over Russell to 43 points.
Despite the result, Antonelli insisted the outcome remained uncertain before the mechanical failure. The 19-year-old suggested the balance of performance between the two Mercedes drivers shifted as the opening stint progressed.
"I think at the end of the stint I had a little bit the upper hand because I had a little bit more pace. George was probably a bit quicker initially, but then he suffered a little bit more tyre degradation. It would have been very close," Antonelli told media, including RacingNews365.
Tyre management appeared to be one of the key factors influencing the battle. Russell extracted strong early performance from his tyres to attack and defend aggressively, while Antonelli seemed to preserve his rubber more effectively as fuel loads decreased and track conditions evolved.
Antonelli also reinforced the message he delivered over team radio after taking the chequered flag. While delighted to secure another victory, he admitted it was not the way he would have chosen to win such an important race.
"It was not good to see him having the failure because, as I said, it would have been a very intense fight all the way until the end. It would have been interesting to see how it ended up, but it's definitely difficult to say," Antonelli added.
With Mercedes continuing to dominate the championship and both drivers establishing themselves as the leading title contenders, the rivalry between Antonelli and Russell is rapidly becoming one of the defining storylines of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Canadian Grand Prix may ultimately be remembered as just one chapter in a championship battle that is far from over.
