Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Andrea Kimi Antonelli will start the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix from pole position after setting the fastest time with Mercedes at the Shanghai International Circuit. The Italian driver also becomes the youngest pole-sitter in Formula 1 history.
Antonelli is the first teenager to start a Formula 1 World Championship grand prix from pole position. The previous record was held by Sebastian Vettel, who secured pole at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix while driving for Toro Rosso. Antonelli’s achievement surpasses that milestone by nearly three years.
On the front row, Antonelli will be joined by team-mate George Russell, giving Mercedes a complete front-row lockout. Behind them, the two Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc line up in third and fourth respectively.

The third row is occupied by the McLaren pairing, with Oscar Piastri starting fifth ahead of Lando Norris. Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing endured a difficult qualifying session, with reigning world champion Max Verstappen qualifying only eighth.
Below is the provisional starting grid for the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix. The grid remains subject to official confirmation by the FIA.
