Kai Allen: Supercars Appeals No-Penalty Tyre Pressure Decision

The stewards' decision not to penalize Kai Allen for a minimum tyre pressure breach in Perth has sparked a strong reaction from Supercars and rival teams. Supercars has formally appealed to the National Court of Appeal, an unprecedented move.

In the incident, two tyres on Allen's Penrite Mustang were found to be below the minimum 16 psi while on the grid ahead of Sunday's race. After a lengthy hearing on Sunday night, Motorsport Australia stewards established a breach but elected not to impose a penalty due to mitigating circumstances, including a 0.4 psi tolerance in the tyre pressure monitoring sensor.

The decision infuriated rival teams and Supercars itself, which subsequently appealed. Supercars argued that “clear and consistent application of the rules is fundamental to maintaining the integrity, fairness and credibility of the championship”. Previously, such breaches have been punished with loss of teams' championship points or disqualification, the latter being the most common outcome for technical breaches.

Dick Johnson Racing's executive chairman, Ryan Story, stressed that a penalty was required and that Supercars made the right call with its appeal. “In every circumstance where this minimum tyre pressure has been in place, if the breach is proven, that's it, you're out,” Story said. He also emphasized the importance of rule integrity, warning that if this decision stands, all teams will look for loopholes in sensor tolerances.

Story added, “If the appeal is dismissed, every team and Supercars themselves will spend an enormous amount of time and energy understanding where they can take the mickey. I don't think that's a good outcome for the sport.”

The appeal hearing is scheduled for August 17 in Melbourne. This decision will set an important precedent for the future enforcement of technical rules in Supercars.
