Aspar Team boss Jorge Martinez “Aspar” has delivered a bold verdict comparing two grand prix legends, stating that Marc Marquez possesses outright speed that is vastly superior to Valentino Rossi during his career.
Speaking on the Fast and Curious podcast as reported by Italian publication GPOne, Martinez shared his perspective on the differences between the two motorsport icons. While acknowledging that Rossi was arguably the more complete all-round rider, the veteran team manager insisted that Marquez holds a distinct advantage in sheer pace.
“[Rossi and Marquez] are very different,” said Jorge Martinez “Aspar”. “I think Valentino, as a rider, was perhaps more complete, but for me Marc is infinitely faster.”

Martinez, who famously raced alongside Rossi during the Italian's early 125cc days and was beaten by him to a maiden grand prix victory in Brno back in 1996, holds immense respect for the current grid benchmark. He emphasized that Marquez's career management, aggressive racing DNA, constant pursuit of the absolute limit, and recovery from devastating injuries set him apart.
“Marc is a rider who deserves to be studied mentally. He has incredible strength. Valentino was also special in this respect, but what Marc has had to face and overcome in his career is something that arouses great admiration,” Martinez noted.
The evolution of Marquez's riding style—shifting from an all-or-nothing approach prior to his 2020 humerus fracture to a more calculated risk-reward balance—has equally impressed the Spanish team owner, who secured the lightweight category title with Max Quiles at the Indonesian Grand Prix.
“The Marc we saw until 2019 was a rider who risked everything. Either he won or he fell, he was brutal. Today he thinks much more and tries to take less risks. It's normal, because he has accumulated experience, experienced very serious injuries and won many titles,” Martinez explained.
Despite this tactical maturation, the 33-year-old remains the definitive reference point in the premier class paddock, particularly highlighted by his uncanny braking capabilities and immediate speed from the opening minutes of practice.
