WorldSBK, Sportrik Media - Jonathan Rea is set to return to the 2026 World Superbike grid at Portimao with Honda, marking his first race appearance since transitioning into the manufacturer’s official test rider role.
The six-time world champion will compete at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve on 27–29 March, stepping in for Jake Dixon, who continues to recover from injuries sustained during pre-season testing in Australia. His immediate return after a brief absence places significant attention on his performance benchmark.
Rea’s recent competitive trajectory is central to evaluating expectations. During his tenure with Yamaha, his results declined compared to his dominant years, managing only one podium and failing to secure a top-three finish throughout the 2025 season. His average finishing position stood at 10th among races he completed.

In contrast, during his championship-winning era with Kawasaki, Rea consistently operated at the front, with only 14 finishes outside the top three across six title-winning seasons. This statistical shift highlights the scale of performance regression and frames the context of his return.
A comparative analysis with Honda’s 2025 performance adds further perspective. Xavi Vierge and Iker Lecuona delivered an average best finish of eighth for Honda, outperforming Rea’s average. This leads to two technical interpretations: either Rea’s individual performance level declined, or Honda’s CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP offered a more competitive package than the Yamaha R1 last season.
These variables shape projections for Portimao. If Honda’s competitive level has been retained or improved into 2026, Rea could potentially deliver stronger results relative to his recent Yamaha period, particularly given the circuit’s characteristics.
“Portimao has always been a strong track for me, and I aim to maximise this opportunity with Honda,” Rea stated in prior team communications.
Historically, Portimao stands as one of Rea’s most successful venues, with 13 race victories and consistent podium finishes across multiple seasons prior to his Yamaha move. This track record strengthens the argument that the Portuguese round could serve as a meaningful performance benchmark.
However, external factors must also be considered. Limited track time due to poor weather conditions during pre-season testing, including the Portimao test earlier in March, has restricted Rea’s adaptation to the Honda machinery. Additionally, his winter preparation was affected by recovery from a knee injury sustained at Jerez in late 2025.
Given these constraints, performance evaluation remains context-dependent. A finishing range between seventh and 10th aligns with statistical expectations based on comparative data. Results above that threshold would indicate strong integration with the Honda package, while lower finishes could be attributed to limited preparation and adaptation time.
The return of Jonathan Rea with Honda at WorldSBK Portimao represents not only a competitive comeback but also a critical technical assessment for both rider and manufacturer. The outcome will provide an early reference point before the championship progresses to subsequent rounds.
